For someone who trains and needs blood-pressure treatment, the drug class matters as much as the numbers on the cuff. Beta blockers cap heart rate and cut maximal oxygen uptake; diuretics are banned in competition. Angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) sit at the opposite end - they lower pressure while leaving aerobic performance intact, and they do it without the nagging cough that sometimes forces people off ACE inhibitors.
