Diuretics and Exercise: Less Plasma, Fewer Electrolytes, and a Ban Whatever the Reason

Diuretics are among the oldest and cheapest blood-pressure drugs, and for a sedentary patient they work well. For an athlete they are a different matter. They lower blood pressure by shedding water and salt, which is exactly what a body training hard in the heat cannot spare - and, quite separately, they are prohibited in tested sport not for what they do to performance but for what they can hide.
