Branched-chain amino acids - leucine, isoleucine and valine - are sold on two promises: that they build muscle and that they protect it. The first claim has largely collapsed under the weight of whole-protein research. The second is more interesting, because there is a real and reproducible effect on the markers of exercise-induced muscle damage, and the question is whether that effect is worth paying for.
