HMB is a metabolite of leucine, marketed on the idea that it slows muscle breakdown and speeds repair. The biochemistry is plausible and the rat data is impressive. The human trial data, once the outliers are set aside, is not. This is one of the clearest cases in sports nutrition of a supplement whose reputation outruns its evidence.
