Coaches are told to build belief. The claim behind it is that an athlete who believes they can perform will perform better, and the coach's job is to install that belief before the event. It sounds unfalsifiable, but it is not: self-efficacy and self-confidence can be measured before competition and compared with what happened, and two meta-analyses from the same research group have now done that across 85 studies.
