The workout log is the least glamorous tool in the gym and the one the evidence supports most strongly. Its two jobs are different. The first is progression: you cannot add weight or reps to last week's number if you do not know last week's number. The second is adherence: writing down what you did is a behaviour-change technique in its own right, and the pooled research on behaviour change has measured how much it matters.
