Concurrent Strength Training and Hamstring-Quadriceps Ratio Effects on Distance Running

Distance runners have two reasons to avoid the weight room: fear of bulk, and the belief that the miles matter more. The trials say the second is only half true. Heavy, low-volume lifting makes runners more economical - they use less oxygen at a given pace - and it shifts race times, without moving VO2max at all. The balance between hamstrings and quadriceps may be part of why.
