For decades the instruction after a concussion was simple: lie in a dark room until the symptoms pass. The instruction was wrong. The largest athlete cohort on the question now shows that starting light exercise within two days of injury speeds recovery, and that prolonged inactivity slows it. What has not changed is that a concussion is a brain injury, and its recognition and clearance are a clinician's job, not a coach's.
