Every coach has watched an athlete's form collapse in the same month as a break-up, a bereavement or an exam, and wondered whether it was a coincidence. The question has a research literature of its own, and it is more specific than "stress is bad for performance." What has been measured is whether the stress in an athlete's life outside sport predicts whether they get hurt in it, and whether anything can be done about it.
