Everyone who trains hard enough for long enough has met the cramp - a calf or hamstring that seizes without warning at kilometre thirty or in the last set. The folk remedies are famous: bananas, salt tablets, stretching, pickle juice. The science is less tidy than the folklore, and the reason is that "the cramp" is probably not one thing.
