Flow is one of the few psychology concepts that escaped academia entirely. Athletes describe it without prompting - time slowing, effort disappearing, the sense of watching yourself perform. Coaches chase it. Entire books promise to teach it. That popularity has outrun the evidence considerably, and the gap is worth examining honestly, because the concept is genuinely useful in ways that do not require any of the extravagant claims made for it.
