A young athlete who was fearless last season and is now flinching from contact, pulling out of tackles or landing stiffly after a jump is showing a recognisable pattern. Sports medicine calls it kinesiophobia, fear of movement, and it usually has a cause, most often an injury or a scare, sometimes seen rather than experienced. The research on it is mostly in adults returning from injury, but its lessons transfer to the nervous teenager on the sideline.
