Visualisation occupies an odd position in sport. Athletes at the highest level use it routinely and describe it as essential, while a fair number of coaches quietly regard it as something between a placebo and a distraction from actual training. Both camps are working from anecdote. The research base is now substantial enough to settle the basic question - it works - and, more usefully, to specify how much, for whom, and in what combination, which is where most practical implementations go wrong.
