Oestrogen is usually discussed as a reproductive hormone. For the athlete it is a tissue hormone - one that strengthens some structures and softens others, that changes across the month and across a lifetime, and that explains part of why women's injury patterns differ so sharply from men's. Understanding what it does, and what it does not do, replaces a lot of folklore about training around the cycle.
