One hard set to failure, or three? For twenty years this was the loudest argument in strength training, and both sides had studies. The single-set trials were not wrong - they were short, and mostly in beginners. The longer and better-measured trials, and the meta-analyses that pooled them, tell a more useful story about where the extra sets actually pay off.
