Research on Weight Training Frequency and Periodization Models

Most training rules of thumb - train a muscle three times a week if you are new, twice if you are experienced; vary your loads rather than climbing a straight line - come from a handful of trials run between 1989 and 2012, most of them small. The rules are not wrong. But the meta-analyses that have since pooled the field show which parts hold, which parts were volume in disguise, and where trained lifters and beginners part ways.
