The idea that some people simply do not respond to training has enormous appeal. It explains a disappointing block, excuses a plateau, and gives a genetic-sounding reason for outcomes that might otherwise implicate the programme or the effort. It has also been the subject of a decade of increasingly careful research, and the careful research has been unkind to it. The variation between people that looked like a fixed trait turns out to be mostly noise, and the people who did not respond to one stimulus tended to respond to another.
