Weight gain is an energy-balance problem in the end, but the behaviours that tip the balance are not equally weighted, and some of the folk wisdom about them is wrong in instructive ways. Alcohol is not uniformly fattening. Smoking is not protective in any way that matters. Sleep does more than people expect. And the evidence for diet composition is more about what you drink than what you fear.
