Ask whether obesity is genetic and you get two true answers that seem to contradict each other. Twin and adoption studies say body weight is among the most heritable of human traits - roughly half to two-thirds of the variation between people runs in families. Genome studies say that all the thousand-plus variants discovered so far explain only a few percent of that variation. The gap between the two is where most of the interesting biology lives: in rare single-gene disorders of appetite, in the interaction between genes and the food environment, and in the epigenetic programming that begins before birth.
