The idea that the bacteria in your gut decide how much fat you carry has moved from laboratory curiosity to supplement-aisle marketing in barely a decade. The laboratory part is real: transfer the gut bacteria of an obese mouse into a germ-free one and it gets fatter than a mouse given lean bacteria, on the same food. The marketing part is not: when the same logic is tested in humans with probiotic capsules, the results are small, strain-specific and inconsistent. Understanding both halves is the difference between a genuine mechanism of obesity and a product that borrows its credibility.
