The pituitary is a pea-sized gland hanging beneath the brain that earns the title 'master gland' by giving orders to almost every other gland in the body. Its front lobe releases six hormones that command growth, the thyroid, the adrenals, the ovaries and testes, and milk production; its back lobe stores two more that manage water balance and childbirth. For anyone who trains, three of these matter most - growth hormone, which pulses with sleep and hard exercise; the gonadotropins that drive testosterone and the cycle; and ACTH, the switch for cortisol - and understanding the gland that controls them explains a surprising amount about recovery, hormones and the risks of trying to override the system.
