Exercising in water is sold on two contradictory promises - that it is easier on the body and that it is a serious workout - and both are true in specific ways. Buoyancy takes load off joints; drag adds resistance to every movement; and the physiology of immersion changes what heart rate and oxygen consumption mean. Understanding those trade-offs is what tells you who should be in the pool and what they should expect from it.
