The arm ergometer, the kayak machine and the canoe-style rower all ask the upper body to do the job the legs normally do: turn a crank or pull a handle hard enough and long enough to load the heart and lungs. They are the machines of choice for anyone who cannot use their legs, for paddlers, and for lifters who want cardio without touching a treadmill. The question is how much aerobic work the arms can actually deliver, and whether a number from an arm test means the same as a number from a leg test.
