Two lifters follow the same programme with the same relative loads. One grinds out extra reps and bounces back the next day; the other hits failure early and feels flat for days. Coaches often put this down to effort or toughness. A line of research using a non-invasive estimate of muscle fibre type suggests part of the answer is built into the muscle: people with a higher share of fast-twitch fibres may both fatigue faster within a session and take far longer to recover from very intense work.
