Heart rate variability is a recovery number many wearables now report. Lifters increasingly track it too, hoping it will tell them how hard a session hit them and when they are ready to go again. For that to work, HRV has to respond to the things that make a lifting session hard, such as load, proximity to failure and fatigue, and it has to stay changed long enough to matter for the next session. Three studies measured exactly that.
