A running programme for a footballer, a handball player or a fighter is not a shorter version of a runner's programme. The sport asks for short, maximal efforts repeated on incomplete rest, with a change of direction in most of them, and the fitness that supports this is measured in sprint times, shuttle distances and the fade across a set of sprints rather than in minutes per kilometre. The question for the coach is what distance and intensity actually build that, and the newest pooled evidence gives a specific answer.
