Treadmill Graded Exercise Tests: Bruce, Balke and What Their VO2max Equations Get Wrong

A graded treadmill test raises the work every few minutes until the person cannot continue, and the time or workload reached is converted into an estimate of maximal oxygen uptake. Without a gas analyser, the estimate is only as good as the equation behind it, and the equations are protocol-specific and population-specific in ways that matter.
